Snowflake Macros

These photos were taken with my Nikon D7000 and my Nikkor 105mm/f2.8G Micro Lens.

It's been snowing here in Germany and I'm still working on perfecting the art of snowflake macro photography. They are just so dang hard for me to capture. So beautiful though. You'll always find me outside on a snowy day trying to get that perfect snowflake photo.

Snow Days

No, we don't currently have snow. I wish. These were taken a few weeks ago. Self portraits in the backyard with my remote and tripod.

Just One Photo

I'm sharing this one photo today.

I took this on October 27, 2012 right outside my house here in Germany. We had our first snow and it was a little magical. I need a little magic in my life right now and something as simple as capturing these tiny snowflakes falling with all the autumn colors as a backdrop just did it perfectly.

The snow didn't last long. We got just enough to create a pretty dusting on everything and then a few hours later it melted. The flurries continued though out the day though.

You may have noticed my absence recently. Please excuse me, I'll be taking some more time away from my blog for a little while. I just need some space as I have a lot of things taking my time and energy, both physically and emotionally. I'll be back when I feel more like blogging and sharing the going on's in our life. Right now I'm just enjoying every moment and cherishing the ones I love and our time together.

Christmas Craft: Crochet Snowflakes

A Christmas Craft!
These crocheted snowflakes are so fun!
I warn you now, these can be really addictive!

They are pretty easy and fast to make. I found the pattern here.
I used white Red Heart yarn and a 5mm hook.

DIRECTIONS:
First chain 6, then join with slip stitch to form a ring.
1. Chain 3 double chains into ring
2. Chain 5, then slip stitch in 5th chain from hook, to form a loop. (this is called a Picot)
3.  Repeat Picot 2 more times.
4. Slip stitch in first stitch of first Picot of 3-Picot group just made.
(This makes one point on the snowflake)
5. 2 double chain in ring
6. Repeat steps 2-5 four more times to make a 5 pointed snowflake.
7. Join with a slip stitch to top of beginning chain 3
8. Finish off and sew in ends.

***Sometimes I have a hard time reading directions when crocheting. If you're like that too, let me know in a comment, I'm considering making a short video on how to crochet these snowflakes.***

Your snowflakes will be floppy and want to fold up.
To make them stiffer and hang pretty, I decided to pin mine down to cardboard and spray with them with starch.
Then, I sprinkled mine with a little silver glitter for a little bit of sparkle!

Sprinkle with glitter when they are wet with starch. Let them dry, flip them over, pin them again and do the other side.

They can be used several ways:

Use them for decorating presents, hang them as ornaments, make a garland or make a pretty window decoration!

Have fun with them!
Happy crocheting!

Snowflake Photography

As promised here are my best shots of the snow and snowflakes the other day. Not the best, but they'll do. I had fun either way, even if I was a frozen popsicle when I finally came back inside!

Still on the hunt for the "perfect" snowflake!

Blizzard, Cookies {RECIPE}, and Four Christmases.

Hello, hello, hello!!!

It snowed all day yesterday AND all night last night. "Blizzard like conditions"! When we woke up this morning the temp was 4 degrees, with a windchill of -17, winds up to 30+mph, and 12 inches of snow! Can we say "brrrr..."

Jack Frost paid us a visit.

Here are some of the pics from the snow day yesterday:

So much snow that my husband couldn't even get the sled to go, it kept getting stuck!

I stayed inside most of the day and made yummy snacks! I had some random stuff in the cupboard and decided to make chocolate covered pretzel sticks (with sprinkles for fun)

Perfect combo of salty and sweet.

Harley wasn't a fan of the chin deep snow, I'm sure he was cursing us for bringing him to this frozen state, when he could be toasty and warm in Southern Georgia!

This picture doesn't even do real justice to what our backyard really looks like!

That snowbank is almost as tall as me. It's at least a good 4 feet!

Yep, that's our driveway!

Looking out from the garage.

Last night I was in the mood for cookies so I baked these yummy Classic Oatmeal and Chocolate Chip ones. They were a new recipe that I had never tried before and they turned out better than I hoped! I thought I would share the recipe with y'all! (That's right I said y'all!)

 Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups flour
2 3/4 cups oatmeal
2 cups chocolate chips

Cream together the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla and beat until light and fluffy. Add Baking soda, powder, and salt and mix. Add flour, oatmeal and chocolate chips. Mix until combined. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

I'm calling them my Oatmeal Choco Blizzard Cookies! :) Posting this recipes reminds me of when I lived in England and I used to have a website to keep all our family and friends up to date with what was going with us and post pics etc. I post a weekly recipe on there. It was fun and I might do it again. I love, love, love to cook and bake so it wouldn't be hard for me to come up with yummy recipes I could share.

Also, I saw this yummy Cresent Chicken on Carrie's Blog and thought it looked so good, that I wanted to try this out. This recipe is from Whatever... (go check it out!) It iis so simple and easy, and I had all the ingredients (there are only 5!) in my kitchen already! Thanks Carrie for posting about this!!

Last night we enjoyed an extra night together. As I mentioned before, my hubby works nights so we only see each other at nights on the weekend. We enjoyed the snow day as a family and then after the little one went to bed we snuggled up on the couch and munched cookies and sipped hot cocoa and watched Four Christmases.

SOOOOO funny!!!! I was laughing all the way through this movie! I was laughing so hard at one point that I couldn't breathe and had to rewind to see what go said while I was struggling to catch my breath!

Preview:

Have a lovely Wendsday everyone! I'll be back soon with a survey and snowflake pictures!
